KUALA LUMPUR, October 20 – Malaysia’s Green Building Index (GBI) certified buildings continue to excel in energy efficiency and sustainability, with five of them earning recognition at the National Energy Awards (NEA) 2023, following a successful showing in the previous year’s NEA 2022. These awards celebrate outstanding achievements in energy-efficient building practices. In the Energy Efficiency building category at NEA 2023, five GBI-certified buildings were among the winners. Here’s how they performed:

Menara PJH (GBI Gold rated), participating for the second consecutive year, was named the runner-up for the Large Green Building Award. IOI City Mall Phase 1 (GBI Certified rated) received the Merit Award in the Large Green Building category. Spritzer ASRS Warehouse in Perak, achieving GBI Certified status, was recognized with the Merit Award in the Zero Energy Building category. PJ Midtown (Retail & Office) (GBI Gold-rated) was the runner-up for the EE Designed Building award.

Tzu Chi International School achieved remarkable success by winning two awards: the Energy Efficiency category for the Large Green Building award and the runner-up position for the EE Designed Building award. Tzu Chi International School, a GBI Silver-rated building, represented Malaysia at the ASEAN Energy Award 2023 held in Bali, Indonesia on August 25, 2023. The school received the first prize for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices in the Green Building Awards (Large category).

This recognition underscores the school’s commitment to blending educational excellence with eco-conscious design, inspiring young minds in a world where sustainability is paramount. In addition to Tzu Chi International School’s success, Malaysia secured several awards in various categories at AEA 2023: Menara PJH was named the runner-up in the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices Award category. Spritzer ASRS Warehouse received the Merit Award in the Zero Energy Building category.

Malaysia’s participation in AEA 2023 included 23 submissions, leading to 12 awards across three distinct categories: the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices Award, the Renewable Energy Project Award, and the Clean Coal Award. Ar. Abu Zarim bin Abu Bakar, Chairman of the GBI Board, expressed his delight at the remarkable achievements of GBI-certified projects at NEA 2023 and AEA 2023. He emphasized GBI’s commitment to fostering a greener and more sustainable built environment in Malaysia.

“The success of GBI-rated projects at the National Energy Awards and ASEAN Energy Awards highlights the caliber of sustainability-focused projects in our community. GBI will continue to lead, inspire, and facilitate the transition towards a greener and sustainable built environment in Malaysia,” said Ar. Abu Zarim, who also serves as the President of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (Malaysian Institute of Architects).
