KUALA LUMPUR, October 25 – In a significant move aimed at bolstering collaboration between Malaysia and Indonesia in the automotive sector, the Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and the Indonesia Automotive Institute (IOI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This event, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Kuala Lumpur, underscores the unwavering commitment of both countries to furthering the advancement of the automotive industry.

MARii and IOI have a strong track record of working together to advance the automotive industries in both Malaysia and Indonesia. Their collaboration has been instrumental in creating business opportunities for local automotive vendors and Small Medium Industries (SMIs) in both nations. This includes facilitating business matching, international exhibitions, and joint ventures aimed at promoting growth in automotive manufacturing, parts localization, and exports, with the ultimate goal of becoming regional and global automotive suppliers.

The MoU paves the way for the establishment of the ASEAN Automotive Institute or alliance, among other forms of engagement among member countries. The primary focus will be on creating business opportunities, enhancing supply chain management, conducting research on cleaner fuels, and improving battery manufacturing to drive a greener and more innovative future for the automotive industry. The MoU Exchange ceremony was witnessed by En. Muhammad Zulhilmi Ahmad, Director of the Industrial Development Division, Ministry of Investment, Trade & Industry (MITI).

This further demonstrates the Malaysian government’s commitment to supporting innovation and progress within the automotive sector. Speaking on the occasion, En. Muhammad Zulhilmi Ahmad stated, “We trust that through this partnership, we will be able to leverage IOI’s expertise and resources to foster mutually beneficial collaborations, where we can attract even greater investments in the automotive ecosystem. This is where ASEAN countries should complement each other, not compete.” Zulhilmi emphasized, “This MoU will enhance cooperation and collaboration with Indonesia in the automotive sector. I am confident that this cooperation and collaboration will not only benefit both countries but also contribute to the betterment of ASEAN countries as a whole, moving towards recovery and shared prosperity for a sustainable future.”

The MoU Exchange occurred during the EVM Summit 2023, themed “Charting the Future of Sustainable Mobility.” This event was held in conjunction with EVM Asia 2023 and featured experts in the automotive field. Speakers and panelists engaged in constructive discussions and insightful exchanges covering various aspects of the EV ecosystem.
