SINGAPORE, October 31 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the importance of a joint effort between Malaysia and Singapore to enhance the capacity of the Johor River, which also serves as a water source for the neighboring republic. In discussions with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to resolving water supply issues between the two nations. To that end, we (Malaysia and Singapore) need to work together to ensure Johor can expand the capacity of the Johor River.
“This is to cater to the growing water requirements of Johor and Singapore alike. Instead of solely focusing on the price mechanism, we should also explore the potential for Singapore to participate in collaborative studies of the Johor River that can begin immediately,” Anwar stated during a live-streamed joint press conference with Lee at the 10th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Singapore today.
