KUALA LUMPUR, November 9 – In honor of World Smile Day®, Colgate-Palmolive has unveiled its #FreeYourSmile campaign, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing Smile Shame and celebrating the power of genuine smiles. This campaign underscores the numerous benefits that smiling brings to mental health, overall well-being, and social connections.
To kickstart this movement, Colgate conducted the Colgate Smile Study 2023, a comprehensive research effort spanning the Asia-Pacific region. In Malaysia, the study revealed that a staggering 97 percent of respondents wished they could smile more freely. The primary reason cited for not doing so was personal doubt about the appearance of their smile, exacerbated by the influence of social media, where 43 percent felt pressured to have perfect teeth before smiling. These findings echoed sentiments across the region, where nearly nine out of ten individuals expressed a desire to smile more freely.
Interestingly, despite these concerns, a significant majority of Malaysians (96 percent) reported that they still smiled whenever they liked, surpassing the regional average of 74 percent. The study, conducted by Pureprofile in August-September 2023, surveyed over 4,000 individuals across eight Asia-Pacific markets, with over 500 respondents from Malaysia. To mark World Smile Day®, Colgate is embracing all smiles by adapting its iconic logo to reflect the diversity of smiles. The brand is also collaborating with regional influencers, including Instagram personalities Ta Ta and Ming Yue, who have experienced Smile Shame but are now embracing their unique smiles.
As part of the #FreeYourSmile campaign, Colgate is introducing a Smile Generator AI tool on its website, encouraging individuals to create their personalized Colgate smiles on TikTok or Instagram and spread the message of celebrating all smiles. Yves Briantais, Executive Vice President of Marketing Asia-Pacific at Colgate-Palmolive, emphasized the brand’s mission to free people from the constraints of Smile Shame and promote authenticity. He noted that Colgate believes in challenging unrealistic beauty standards and offers a range of products to support individuals on their personal journey to a healthier smile.
According to the Colgate Smile Study 2023, 81 percent of Malaysians believe that brands should play a role in addressing Smile Shame. Smiling has numerous benefits, including reducing stress, acting as a natural anti-depressant and pain reliever, improving heart health, and strengthening the immune system. Additionally, smiling enhances social connections, fosters trust, and leaves a positive impression on others. Smile Shame refers to feelings of embarrassment, self-consciousness, or insecurity about one’s smile. The Colgate Smile Study 2023 found that 63 percent of Malaysians can relate to the concept of Smile Shame, with 45 percent having personally experienced it.
The study also revealed that 86 percent of Malaysians feel it is safe to discuss Smile Shame, reflecting growing societal acceptance of open dialogue about personal insecurities. Smile Shame manifests differently in various markets, reflecting diverse perceptions of what constitutes a beautiful smile. In Malaysia, it is often associated with teeth structure, the perception of a fake smile, and tooth color. #FreeYourSmile is Colgate’s first step in its mission to celebrate all smiles and combat Smile Shame, with more initiatives planned. The movement seeks to inspire individuals to express themselves freely and proudly, regardless of perceived imperfections.
