SAN FRANCISCO, November 18 – During the Apec Economic Leaders’ Informal Dialogue and Working Lunch in San Francisco, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim voiced strong concerns over the escalating crisis in the Gaza Strip, attributing it to a “clear abandonment of moral responsibility.” He condemned the relentless air and ground attacks by Israel, emphasizing the devastating impact on the Palestinian population. Anwar highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Palestine as a matter of global significance, stressing the need for international intervention and adherence to international law to address the ongoing bloodshed.

Anwar, also serving as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, urged developed nations to play a more active role in supporting developing countries in their energy transition efforts. He emphasized the importance of ensuring a fair and equitable transition, acknowledging Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability and its efforts to combat climate change. Malaysia, being one of the 17 recognized mega-diverse countries, faces the risk of population displacement due to climate change, prompting the government to invest in a cleaner, greener future through initiatives like the National Energy Transition Roadmap.

Commending the bilateral meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of Apec, Anwar underscored the pivotal role of China-US engagement in shaping the future of Apec. The Prime Minister’s statements reflect Malaysia’s commitment to global sustainability and environmental responsibility, urging collective action to address pressing humanitarian and climate challenges.
