GEORGE TOWN, November 20 — The Malaysian government is set to harness the potential of Penang’s tourism industry by focusing on the port and airport as twin engines to drive long-term economic growth in the state. Anthony Loke Siew Fook, the Minister of Transport, announced plans to expand the Penang International Airport in collaboration with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
The expansion aims to nearly double the airport’s handling capacity to accommodate up to 12 million passengers annually, with efforts underway to expedite the project before the upcoming General Election. Loke highlighted the positive impact of the government’s decision to upgrade and expand the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal in 2018. This initiative has significantly boosted the cruise sector in Penang and aligns with the Ministry of Transport’s strategy to establish the state as a “homeport” for international shipping companies.
Emphasizing the importance of the port and airport as crucial factors in the economic strength of an island, Loke stated that developing these twin engines is essential to support Penang’s thriving electronics industry. The government’s strategic focus on enhancing transportation infrastructure aligns with its broader economic development goals for Penang, with the port and airport envisioned as key drivers for tourism and trade, ultimately contributing to the state’s economic resilience and growth.
