GEORGE TOWN, November 21 – The Penang Art District (PAD) is pioneering an innovative exchange program to fortify international artistic collaboration by partnering with the French artistic team ONYO. Sponsored by Institut Français, Switch/Urban Republic, PETACE, the Embassy of France in Malaysia, and Alliance Française de Penang, this collaboration aims to cultivate cultural and creative connections between Penang and France. The centerpiece of this collaboration is the immersive art installation “The Tree of Light” by ONYO, creating a sensory experience that integrates sound, narrative, and ecological fable to rediscover enchantment in the world.
“The Tree of Light” goes beyond a traditional art installation, incorporating a breathing exercise into the narrative to enhance participants’ general well-being. As part of this exchange program, students from the School of Arts at USM actively participated in building the sculpture, marking a crucial step towards a stronger international alliance in the field of art. This initiative, with the support of the Penang State Government and the Malaysian French Embassy, represents a significant milestone in cultural exchange, fostering global connections in the arts. This marks the first collaboration between Penang Art District and the French artistic team ONYO, launching the creatively enriched exchange project – “The Tree of Light.”
The initiative is made possible by the support and equipment assistance from Institut Français and Switch/Urban Republic, along with heartfelt thanks to Penang Alliance Français and the Embassy of France in Malaysia. This event lays the foundation for cultural and artistic connections between Penang and France, building upon a relationship that dates back to 1840 when French design influences were already present in Penang. In 2018, George Town established sister city ties with Arles, France, fostering closer exchanges between the two world heritage cities and sharing cultural and artistic beauty. ONYO founders, Charlotte-Amelie Veaux and Yann Gaarreau, both young and talented French artists, guided students from the School of Arts at USM in the creation of the “Tree of Light” sculpture.
This unique learning opportunity for university students represents the continuous growth of cultural ties between France and Penang. Artistic exchange has been a focal point for the Penang Art District, aiming to transcend local boundaries and embody the essence of Southeast Asian art authentically. The “Tree of Light” makes its debut in Asia, not just as an art installation but as a unique form of serene artistic therapy. This initiative is a milestone in cultural exchanges between Penang and France, bridging the Penang artistic community with French artistry.
