KUALA LUMPUR, November 23 — Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli asserted that the consecutive quarterly growth in Malaysia’s economy since Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim assumed the role of finance minister validates the effectiveness of the Madani Economic Framework. Responding to former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s claim of diminishing public confidence in the current government’s economic management, Rafizi highlighted the unprecedented back-to-back economic growth in the last three quarters.
He questioned Muhyiddin’s record during the 33 months when his government was in power, emphasizing the current positive momentum in economic indicators such as the lowest poverty rate and higher wage growth. Rafizi addressed Muhyiddin directly, challenging the notion of economic stagnation and lack of confidence, stating that confidence is gradually returning, including among investors. He dismissed Muhyiddin’s suggestion that the Ministry of Finance (MoF) should be headed by someone else, emphasizing that the MoF’s primary role is fiscal management.
And that Anwar, as the Prime Minister, is the best person to oversee the ministry, particularly in ensuring transparent governance in procurement processes. Rafizi defended Anwar’s decision to lead the MoF, emphasizing that it aligns with the responsibilities of the prime minister in overseeing economic planning and governance. Despite criticisms over Anwar’s decision to take over the finance portfolio, Rafizi defended the move, stating that it is essential for the prime minister to lead the MoF to ensure effective governance and transparency in procurement processes.
