KUALA LUMPUR, November 30 — DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has called on the unity government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to commence the implementation of promised reforms before the next general election in 2027. Acknowledging that meaningful reforms take time, Kit Siang emphasized the importance of delivering on pledges now that Malaysia has achieved relative political stability. He urged the government to ensure voters have the opportunity to assess its performance on merits, preventing detractors from gaining momentum.
In a statement, Kit Siang expressed dissatisfaction with certain developments but stressed that with restored political stability, Anwar’s unity government has a window of three to four years to fulfill reform promises. He cautioned that failure to deliver on commitments related to separation of power, the rule of law, an independent judiciary, anti-corruption efforts, good governance, educational reforms, human rights, freedom of speech and religion, could lead to voter dissatisfaction. Kit Siang urged Malaysians to strengthen national unity amid growing polarization in the political landscape.
Reflecting on lessons learned during the 22-month Pakatan Harapan administration, Kit Siang emphasized that meaningful reforms take time but asserted that the current political stability provides an opportune moment for Anwar’s government to deliver on its promised changes. He also called for critics to reserve judgment for three or four years, allowing sufficient time to evaluate the government’s success or failure in fulfilling reform commitments by the 16th general election.
