KUALA LUMPUR, December 9 – The National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) and its e-Commerce Malaysia chapter express approval for the recent announcement by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil that the government has no plans to block TikTok’s marketplace, TikTok Shop. They also appreciate the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)’s ongoing efforts to formulate a comprehensive framework for registering and regulating social media and related platforms within the country.
Advocating for collaborative policy formulation, PIKOM and e-Commerce Malaysia stress the importance of ensuring upcoming regulations promote innovation and active participation by local businesses in Malaysia’s Digital Economy. With the expected MCMC framework in a month, both organizations see this as a crucial step in fostering the continuous growth of the country’s Digital Economy. Emphasizing the need for equitable regulations, PIKOM and e-Commerce Malaysia call for prioritizing local businesses, products, and enablers over foreign players.
They express optimism that the MCMC will implement measures to prevent the influx of foreign goods into Malaysia, creating a digital marketplace where Malaysian enterprises thrive while maintaining competitive fairness. In their recommendations, both organizations advocate for active engagement with platforms like TikTok Shop, capacity building for local players, strategic partnerships for community investment in local talent and SMEs, and ensuring local brands are prioritized in consumer traffic. PIKOM and e-Commerce Malaysia reiterate their commitment to collaborating with the government and international platforms to create a digital landscape where both local and global entities contribute to Malaysia’s prosperous and robust Digital Economy.
