KUALA LUMPUR, December 22 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil clarified that the 10% sales tax on online purchases only applies to imported goods valued under RM500. He emphasized that the tax aims to enhance the competitiveness of local products, which remain unaffected when purchased online. Fahmi encouraged the public to refer to the official website of the Customs Department for detailed information. The Royal Malaysian Customs Department recently announced the implementation of a 10% sales tax on low-value goods sold online starting January 1, 2024.
Speaking at a press conference, Fahmi explained that the tax is specifically applicable to products imported from overseas and sold online in Malaysia. Local products, on the other hand, remain exempt from this tax. He expressed hope that the clarification would address any misunderstandings among the public about the tax and emphasized the government’s commitment to monitor and ensure understanding among online sellers and buyers. Additionally, Fahmi commended the R.E.N.E.W program launched by the Institute of Continuing Education Professional Studies (iCEPS) of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), highlighting its positive impact on environmental preservation.
