GEORGE TOWN, December 28 – The George Town Institute of Open and Advanced Studies (GIOAS) launched the “Spirited” tribal art exhibition at Wawasan Open University (WOU), offering a unique glimpse into the ancient cultures of tribal communities. Curated by David Goh, founder of Entopia, the exhibition features art collected from indigenous artists across Southeast Asia during butterfly-collecting expeditions. Dato’ Seri Dr Anwar Fazal, Chairman of Think City, officially opened the exhibition, emphasizing its reflection on historical violence and inequities inflicted on indigenous peoples.
The exhibition aims to foster a deeper connection between technology, creativity, and education, with GIOAS leading the way in showcasing Penang as a cultural and intellectual hub. The “Spirited” Exhibition at Wawasan Open University, curated by David Goh, showcases approximately 60 art pieces collected from indigenous artists across Southeast Asia. The exhibition is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for visitors to experience rare artworks from remote Pacific islands, shedding light on the diverse cultures of tribal communities.
The artifacts and objects on display aim to convey the spirit of indigenous communities, emphasizing their respect for ancestors and their harmonious coexistence with nature. The exhibition runs from December 16, 2023, to January 16, 2024, with conducted tours available on specific dates. Admission is free, encouraging the public to explore and appreciate the rich cultural heritage presented at the Homestead, WOU’s main campus.
