KUALA LUMPUR, December 30 — Embark on a cultural odyssey with IKAT 2.0, a year-long program celebrating Malaysia’s diverse textile heritage. The pop-up textile experiential hub is set to tour Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Terengganu, and Kuching, inviting Malaysians to explore the rich tapestry of textile art, ethnic stories, and exceptional craftsmanship. IKAT 2.0 integrates immersive installations, heritage textile galleries, hands-on workshops, engaging talks, and a fashion show, providing an unprecedented opportunity to connect with Malaysia’s vibrant cultural fabric.

The Kuala Lumpur edition kicks off on January 6th and 7th, 2024, at The Godown Arts Centre. IKAT, an acronym for Immersive Knowledge and Textile, stands at the intersection of tradition and technology, aiming to conserve and revitalize Malaysian textile heritage. Through strategic collaborations with artisans, new media artists, educational institutions, and subject matter experts, IKAT seeks to breathe new life into traditional crafts. The program aims to deepen Malaysians’ appreciation for heritage textiles, motifs, techniques, and the intricate processes of their creation.

The inaugural KL edition of IKAT 2.0, themed “Whispers of Borneo’s Dreams,” promises an immersive experience centered around Bornean artisanal textiles. From the centuries-old Iban handwoven textile Pua Kumbu to the intricate pis embroidery of the Rungus tribe and the beaded art of Borneo’s indigenous communities, the event showcases the rich tapestry of the region’s cultural heritage. This edition, curated by Jacqueline Fong of Tanoti Crafts, features live demonstrations, artisan-guided workshops, engaging talks, and an exclusive fashion showcase on January 7th, 2024. IKAT 2.0, led by the Experiential Design Team (EDT) and powered by Yayasan Hasanah, invites all to join this unique cultural exploration, free of charge.
