KUALA LUMPUR, December 31 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on contractors awarded government projects to view each assignment as an opportunity to showcase their best performance in terms of quality, productivity, and professionalism. Emphasizing that these projects are a trust and responsibility involving the rights of others, Zahid urged contractors to prioritize trustworthiness and strive for creativity and competitiveness.
Speaking at the dinner and inauguration of the 44th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) and the launch of PKMM’s New Generation Contractors Council (MKGB), Zahid acknowledged the challenges faced by the construction sector due to the Covid-19 pandemic and highlighted the potential positive impact of the Madani Economy initiative in driving change amid economic uncertainty. Zahid, represented by his political secretary Datuk Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii, recognized the difficulties in the construction sector following the pandemic and expressed confidence that the allocation through Budget 2024 at the Federal and state government levels would serve as a long-term investment to revive physical and economic development.
He noted that this support would reinvigorate the implementation of projects, especially for small and medium-sized contractors. Citing statistics from the Ministry of Public Works, Zahid highlighted the estimated losses of over RM42 billion in the construction industry since the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in March 2020.
