GEORGE TOWN, January 11 – The recovery plan for the January 2024 scheduled water supply interruption is progressing as scheduled. Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) has successfully completed all planned water works at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and 22 other locations ahead of schedule. Stage 1 of the recovery plan commenced at 11:00 PM on January 10, 2024. Water supply is gradually normalizing today for 197,025 consumers in Seberang Perai, representing 33% of the affected consumers. Stage 1 is expected to be completed by 6:00 AM on January 12, 2024, as per the schedule.

Stage 1 remains unaffected by the incident at Sungai Perai due to the Sungai Dua WTP pumping water to Stage 1 recovery consumers via other major pipelines. Meanwhile, emergency response repair work at Sungai Perai faced delays last night due to a technical issue with one of the clamps designed to cover a 1.35m long hole on the pipeline. Dive operations were postponed, and a heavy crane has been deployed for on-site modification. The commercial dive team is scheduled to secure the modified clamp on the damaged pipeline today.

The upcoming Stage 2, scheduled for implementation from 6:01 AM on January 12, 2024, targets normalizing water supply services for 495,065 consumers in Seberang Perai and on Penang Island. The success of Stage 2 depends on the re-commissioning of the damaged section of the Sungai Perai underwater pipeline. PBAPP is exerting efforts to complete the Sungai Perai emergency repair works promptly, and further updates on the progress will be provided.
