GEORGE TOWN, January 11 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has expressed deep concern over the sudden surge in onion prices in Penang markets. According to CAP’s market survey in Penang, imported Indian onions are now priced at RM9.00 per kilogram, indicating a nearly 100% increase from the controlled price of RM5.00 per kg during the Christmas festival. Wholesalers attribute the problem to a halt in the supply from India and report that 40% of a 10kg sack of imported onions are damaged and rotten, affecting overall availability. CAP urges FAMA and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to conduct an immediate investigation into the substantial price hike, assess its justification, and examine the quality of the onions.
