ISKANDAR PUTERI, January 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared that the Opposition lacks the strength to push for a motion of no-confidence against the unity government in Parliament. Speaking at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Gelang Patah, Anwar emphasized that it has been a year since the formation of the unity government, and the Opposition has not been successful in casting doubts on his support. He dismissed recent threats by the Opposition to trigger a change of government through a no-confidence motion, stating that such efforts are merely political maneuvering and propaganda.
Anwar encouraged his critics to work with the people if they aim to bring about a change in the administration. He asserted that ultimately, the choice lies with the people. Anwar also reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption among leaders and individuals in positions of power, emphasizing the role of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). He stated that those not guilty should not worry, as the investigation is conducted carefully, and prosecution only occurs with strong evidence.
Recently, MACC initiated corruption probes against former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin. The investigations involve possible misconduct related to government publicity spending and financial dealings, respectively. Daim’s family has challenged the MACC investigations, claiming that there is no reasonable cause under the MACC Act or the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
