KUALA LUMPUR, January 15 – Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil clarified that there have been no in-depth discussions about a proposed Bill to maintain the same government in power until the end of its term. While the idea of such a Bill has been raised at the Cabinet level, Fahmi highlighted that there hasn’t been extensive exploration of the proposal.
He mentioned that in some other countries, similar legislation incorporates anti-party hopping laws or prescribes specific terms for a Parliament, citing the examples of the United Kingdom’s Fixed Term Parliament Act and the four-year term for the President in the United States. Fahmi emphasized that the intention behind the proposed Bill is to ensure the stability of the country and prevent situations like the frequent changes in the prime minister’s position during the 14th Parliament term.
He stressed that the discussions are part of broader efforts to enhance governance and stability. In a separate matter, Fahmi addressed concerns about the appointment of Sangetha Jayakumar, Wanita PKR vice-chief, to the Port Klang Authority’s board of directors. He clarified that the appointment is not problematic as the Port Klang Authority is not considered a government-linked company (GLC), and PKR’s criticism primarily focuses on political appointments to GLCs. Fahmi assured that he would bring any concerns about such appointments to the Cabinet for further discussion.
