GEORGE TOWN, January 15 – The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is set to install two new pipes in Sungai Perai as a temporary measure to address a recent irreparable leak. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the replacement work requires approval from the Public Works Department (JKR) due to the diversion crossing the Ampang Jajar bridge under JKR’s supervision.
The aging pipe, in use for over 30 years, has sustained irreparable damage, prompting PBAPP’s proposal for the immediate installation of two new pipes to secure the water supply. The temporary solution involves a detour of 500 meters and is expected to be completed in a month. Meanwhile, experienced divers are ready to make temporary repairs to monitor and address any immediate concerns related to the leak. Chow emphasized the importance of obtaining JKR’s approval swiftly for the emergency repair.
For the long term, plans include building a new pipe further from the bridge on the surface of the river, avoiding the bed. The ongoing monitoring and proactive approach by PBAPP and relevant authorities showcase their commitment to ensuring the uninterrupted water supply for consumers in the Barat Daya district. The swift response and strategic planning demonstrate the dedication to resolving infrastructure challenges promptly and efficiently.
