KUALA LUMPUR, January 17 – Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that there is no urgency to swiftly enact a law establishing fixed dates for general elections in Malaysia, despite concerns of a potential government takeover through defections. Anwar emphasized that discussions on the matter have not taken place, and while he welcomes the suggestion, it is premature to make decisions without obtaining feedback from key figures and legal experts.
The Deputy Prime Minister had recently proposed the idea of a fixed-term parliament to ensure a government’s full five-year tenure and prevent political upheavals. Anwar, focusing on transforming Malaysia, stressed the need to govern effectively and dismissed concerns raised by the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
