KUALA LUMPUR, January 19 — The National Water Service Commission (SPAN) disclosed today that consumers in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah would experience a water tariff hike of 22 sen per cubic metre, effective from February 1. While acknowledging the increase, SPAN emphasized that the adjusted tariffs would still be relatively low, intending to strike a balance between covering operational costs and ensuring affordable water access for the public.

The commission clarified that, even with the raise, the tariffs would fall short of meeting the actual expenses incurred in providing a reliable water supply nationwide. This move by SPAN aims to maintain sustainability in the water sector and guarantee continued service excellence despite the challenges posed by the current cost dynamics. The commission assures consumers that it remains committed to fair and transparent regulation to benefit both the public and the water service providers.
