GEORGE TOWN, January 22 — Penang anticipates a congregation of one million Hindu devotees from January 24 to 26 to partake in the Thaipusam festival. RSN Rayer, the Chairman of the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB), announced that this year’s Thaipusam will mark a unique celebration of unity, featuring both the gold and silver chariots in a procession to the temple in Jalan Kebun Bunga. The chariots will move in close proximity, approximately one kilometer apart, and efforts will be made to expedite the procession, aiming to reach the temple by 11 pm.

Rayer emphasized coordination to prevent a repeat of past delays, stating that the golden chariot will set off from the temple in Lebuh Queen at 5:30 am on January 24, followed by the silver chariot an hour later from the temple in Lebuh Penang. Both chariots will return to their respective temples on January 26. In addition to the grand procession, 150 ‘thaneer panthal’ (refreshment stalls) will be set up along the route to offer free food and drinks to participants.

While Thaipusam holds significance for Hindus, Rayer acknowledged its appeal to foreign tourists and urged everyone involved to respect the religious celebration. He urged against actions that could tarnish the event, such as consuming alcohol or lighting firecrackers. Rayer also called for responsible parking to avoid emergencies and encouraged the use of public transport, with the government providing free bus and ferry services during Thaipusam. Additionally, he recommended the use of face masks, especially for high-risk individuals, and advised early arrival for those participating in the religious rituals.
