GEORGE TOWN, January 30 – In response to the statement released by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) emphasizes key points regarding the adjustment of water supply service rates for the Domestic Category as follows:
- Water supply rates in Penang remain among the lowest in Malaysia.
- The lowest water supply rate tier has not been reviewed since 1993, 31 years ago.
- PBAPP still subsidizes rates as they are lower than production and operational costs.
- 77% of water users in Penang pay tariffs below RM10.85/month.
- 52% of water users in Penang pay a rate of RM6.20/month.
- The increased revenue from the adjustment will be used for water supply infrastructure upgrades, but it still cannot cover the necessary operational costs and infrastructure improvements.
Additionally, in conjunction with the rate adjustment, PBAPP is implementing a targeted rebate program for specific groups: (i) Family-Friendly Rebate
- B40 group.
- Household income of RM2,250/month and below.
- Eight or more occupants in the household.
- RM10/month rebate. (ii) Mutiara Rebate
- eKasih scheme recipients.
- Household income of RM1,036/month and below.
- RM10/month rebate.
