GEORGE TOWN, February 5 — Today marks the highly anticipated opening of the first phase of Gurney Bay in Penang, a remarkable seafront park built on reclaimed land at a cost of RM221 million. Previously known as Gurney Wharf, this scenic addition was officially unveiled by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow this morning, symbolizing the realization of eager anticipation along the coast of George Town.

The initial phase covers over 27 acres and boasts features such as a viewing deck, playground, skate park, kiosks, toilets, and open-air car parks. One of its standout features is a promenade along the sea, offering visitors breathtaking views of the Penang coastline. According to Chow, the completion of Phase One took approximately one year and seven months from the groundbreaking on May 14, 2022. This phase includes the planting of 1,500 trees and around 10,000 shrubs. Phase Two, covering about 74.1 acres, is currently at 40% completion and is expected to finalize by mid-2025.

The upcoming phase will introduce additional facilities, such as a multilevel car park, hawker centre, vantage point, water taxi jetty, beach and boardwalk, water garden, commercial and retail areas, along with more open-air car park lots. Upon completion of Phase Two, Gurney Bay will provide a total of 800 car parks, 12 bus lots, and 238 motorcycle lots, ensuring ample space for visitors, with additional options available in nearby malls and hotels.
