KUALA LUMPUR, February 10 – In response to former MP Tony Pua’s critique of the Federal Territories Pardons Board’s decision to reduce the jail sentence and fine of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, DAP has announced that it will not impose disciplinary measures against Pua. Anthony Loke, the party’s secretary-general, clarified that Pua did not contravene party regulations, and investigative matters would be handled by the police. Loke underscored that Pua’s independence from DAP’s directives and his commitment to his principles rendered punitive action unnecessary.
Pua’s comments on Facebook, which prompted a police investigation under the Sedition Act 1948 and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, sparked debates on freedom of expression and the role of political criticism. Despite denying any seditious intent, Pua has cooperated with the police investigation. Loke acknowledged Pua’s contributions to exposing the 1MDB scandal but emphasized the need for respectful discourse within the party, especially given DAP’s coalition with Umno in the government. Meanwhile, Ong Kian Ming’s call for a firm stance on Najib’s case and the investigation against Pua was dismissed by Loke as baseless, reaffirming DAP’s unwavering commitment to justice and accountability.
