KUALA LUMPUR, February 10 – Penang residents will see revised domestic water rates starting February 1, 2024, in accordance with new Federal Government Regulations introduced on January 31, 2024. The “Water Services Industry (Rates for Water Supply Services) (State of Penang) (Amendment) Regulations” outline the updated rates for domestic water supply services. For consumption ranging from 0 to 20m3, the rate is RM0.62 per m3, increasing to RM1.17 per m3 for consumption between 20m3 and 35m3, and further to RM2.07 per m3 for usage exceeding 35m3.
Additionally, a minimum charge of RM6.20 per month is applicable. Notably, the average rate for domestic consumption up to 35m3 monthly is RM0.86 per m3, positioning it as the second-lowest average domestic tariff nationwide. Beyond domestic consumption, the regulations also introduce new rates for various types of water usage, including domestic bulk meter services, non-domestic consumption, water supply for houses of worship and welfare institutions, and shipping.
The adjustments aim to ensure fair and sustainable pricing across different consumer categories. The implementation of these new rates is expected to generate approximately RM86 million in additional revenue for the PBA Group of Companies in 2024. These funds will be crucial for financing essential water supply infrastructure projects in Penang, such as the construction of the 1,350mm Sungai Perai “River-crossing” Pipeline and other critical pipeline replacement initiatives outlined in Penang’s Water Contingency Plan 2030 (WCP 2030).
