GEORGE TOWN, February 11 – Police in Penang are currently investigating an unsettling incident at a homestay in Jelutong, where a guest allegedly discovered a hidden camera in one of the rooms. The investigation was prompted by a viral post on Twitter, shared by the account “ISU SEMASA VIRAL,” which detailed the guest’s claim of being a victim of voyeurism through the hidden camera. Northeast District Police Chief Razlam Ab Hamid has confirmed receiving a police report on the matter and stated that investigations are underway under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which addresses offenses against modesty.
According to initial inquiries, a 24-year-old woman, accompanied by three friends, checked into the Jelutong homestay on February 5, 2024, for a vacation. On the evening of February 6, 2024, the woman discovered the hidden camera cleverly concealed within an air freshener container in the bathroom. Acting swiftly, she removed the device, reported the incident to the homestay management, and filed a police report at the Jelutong police station.
As the investigation progresses, the police are exploring all possible angles to understand the full scope of the incident. Despite the seriousness of the situation, preliminary scrutiny of the hidden camera revealed no stored images or videos. Chief Razlam urges the public to refrain from speculating about the case, emphasizing the importance of avoiding actions that could potentially interfere with the ongoing investigation.
