KUALA LUMPUR, February 14 – The much-anticipated defamation trial involving Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, which was set to commence today, has been rescheduled to July 19. Judicial Commissioner Gan Techiong approved the adjournment following Dr Mahathir’s hospitalization at the National Heart Institute (IJN) since January 26. Dr Mahathir’s legal representative, Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi, presented a medical certificate from IJN, citing the former Prime Minister’s health condition as the reason for the postponement.

Ahmad Zahid’s legal team suggested a trial start date in October; however, Gan underscored the urgency of the matter, given Dr Mahathir’s advanced age and health concerns. In response, the court arranged new trial dates spanning from July to October, ensuring a fair and accommodating approach for both parties involved. The trial is poised to witness testimonies from Dr Mahathir and his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz, alongside witnesses for the defense, including the deputy prime minister.

The decision to adjourn the trial reflects the practical challenges posed by Dr Mahathir’s health condition, underlining the necessity for flexibility in legal proceedings. As the trial awaits resumption in July, stakeholders continue to monitor developments closely, emphasizing the importance of ensuring justice while prioritizing the well-being of all parties involved.
