KUALA LUMPUR, February 16 — The Sessions Court has decided to temporarily halt proceedings regarding former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s application to set aside his three remaining money-laundering charges in order to obtain a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA). The decision follows the prosecution’s successful application for a stay, pending the Court of Appeal’s ruling on an appeal related to Muhyiddin’s acquittal over four abuse of power charges.
Sessions Court Judge Azura Alwi granted the stay application, allowing the court to pause proceedings until the Court of Appeal issues its decision. This development occurred after the prosecution argued for the need to maintain the status quo until the appeal regarding Muhyiddin’s acquittal is resolved. Muhyiddin’s defense team contended that there were no exceptional circumstances justifying a stay and emphasized Muhyiddin’s right to seek a DNAA, particularly since the predicate offenses had already been struck out.
The next steps in Muhyiddin’s legal proceedings are contingent upon the Court of Appeal’s decision, which will ultimately determine the course of action regarding both the prosecution’s appeal and Muhyiddin’s application for a DNAA.
