PUTRAJAYA, February 20 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to uphold the provisions of the Federal Constitution, specifically Article 153, which safeguards Bumiputera privileges. His statement follows Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim’s call for a review of Bumiputera privileges under Article 153 during the upcoming Bumiputera Economic Congress 2024 (KEB 2024).
Speaking at the 15th International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar affirmed the government’s dedication to preserving these privileges, essential for the special position of Malays and natives of Sabah and Sarawak, while also considering the legitimate interests of other communities. Article 153 empowers the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to protect the rights of Bumiputera, including quotas in civil services, public scholarships, and education.
Hassan’s concerns regarding potential misuse of affirmative action policies by certain Bumiputera elites have sparked discussions about the need for revisions to ensure a more needs-based approach. Anwar emphasized that the forthcoming Bumiputera Economic Congress would foster broader participation from Chinese and Indian communities, signaling a collaborative effort to address poverty issues alongside Bumiputera economic concerns.
