KUALA LUMPUR, February 23 – Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, the president of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), has called on the government to exempt water and electricity from the planned 2 percentile increase in the sales and service tax (SST). Wee emphasized that including utilities in the SST hike would impose additional financial burdens on consumers and lead to higher production costs for manufacturers and increased rental fees for businesses. He highlighted the importance of providing relief to consumers, especially amidst economic challenges, and urged the government to reconsider its decision to subject water and electricity to the SST increase.

Wee stressed the need for government policies to be implemented based on careful consideration and scientific studies, emphasizing the importance of listening to the grievances of the people and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of data. He also suggested that the government revisit previous policies, such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and consider reinstating them if they prove beneficial to the country. Wee’s remarks underscore MCA’s commitment to advocating for the welfare of the people and providing constructive feedback to the government for the betterment of the nation.
