LABUAN, March 4 — The Federal Territory of Labuan is poised for improved connectivity and upgraded port facilities as the government, through the Ministry of Transport (MOT), commits to increasing direct flight frequency and exploring upgrades for Labuan Liberty Port. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr. Zaliha Mustafa affirmed this commitment following discussions with Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Loke pledged to address the concerns raised by Labuan residents during an engagement session last month, focusing on increasing direct flight frequency and considering the upgrade of Labuan Liberty Port, which has served for over 70 years. The commitment received praise from Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM) Chief Operating Officer Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong, who highlighted the urgent need for upgrades, particularly for the jetty, to accommodate potential international cruises. Labuan Corporation (LC) Chief Executive Officer Rithuan Ismail expressed optimism about the discussions, emphasizing LC’s readiness to facilitate proposed port upgrading works for the benefit of Labuan’s economy and tourism industry.
