KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 – Leading tire manufacturer Goodyear has revealed plans to close its manufacturing plant in Shah Alam, Malaysia, effective June 30, 2024, impacting approximately 550 employees. This decision is part of the company’s “Goodyear Forward” transformation initiative aimed at optimizing operations and achieving significant cost reductions to remain competitive in the industry. Nathaniel Madarang, President of Goodyear Asia Pacific, emphasized that while this decision was difficult, it is necessary to advance the long-term interests of the business and its customers.
The closure of the Shah Alam plant is expected to contribute to Goodyear’s goal of reducing annual costs by $1 billion by 2025. Madarang assured that the welfare of affected employees remains a priority for Goodyear, and the company is committed to treating them with respect and transparency throughout the process. Despite the closure of the Shah Alam facility, Goodyear will continue to serve the Malaysian market by importing tires from its factories in Thailand, Indonesia, China, and Taiwan. Established in 1972, the Shah Alam plant has been a significant part of Goodyear’s manufacturing operations in Malaysia for several decades.
