KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 – Concerned about the potential digital gap between large corporations and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in adopting cutting-edge technologies like 5G, the Malaysian government has pledged to bridge this divide. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil emphasized the need for a new business model to ensure SMEs and startups keep pace with technological advancements. He highlighted existing government policies, such as digitization grants and soft loans offered by banks, as avenues to assist businesses in adopting new technologies.
Fahmi’s statement came after the launch of Maxis Bhd and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’s “5.5G” or “5G advanced” network, aimed at enhancing industrial productivity in Malaysia. This advanced technology, claimed to be 10 times faster than the current 5G network, signals the need for innovative business models and government support for seamless adoption. Fahmi underscored the importance of understanding industry needs to devise effective assistance measures, as evidenced by the government’s commitment to listen and collaborate with stakeholders.
