KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 – The Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP) has confirmed that there was no personal data breach following the alleged cyberattack on Maxis Berhad by the hacking group R00TK1T. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo assured the public that Maxis had promptly notified JPDP about the incident, and subsequent digital forensic investigations confirmed the absence of any personal data breach. The follow-up investigation by JPDP found no evidence of personal data involvement based on the provided data samples, alleviating concerns regarding potential data compromise.
Gobind clarified that the cyberattack only affected Maxis’ Interactive Retail Assistant (MIRA) Queue Management System at a specific Maxis branch, which operates independently and is not linked to critical Maxis systems. He underscored the collaborative efforts between CyberSecurity Malaysia, JPDP, and the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa) in monitoring and safeguarding the nation’s digital infrastructure. Additionally, the Ministry is actively engaged in capacity-building initiatives, including scholarships and collaborations with universities and private companies, to bolster the country’s cybersecurity expertise and readiness against cyber threats.
