KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 – In commemoration of International HPV Awareness Day 2024, GSK joins the global initiative to combat human papillomavirus (HPV), the leading cause of cervical cancer in Malaysia. Despite being preventable, cervical cancer ranks as the 4th most common cancer among women in the country.

Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders, GSK aims to educate the public on HPV infections and associated cancers, emphasizing prevention through screening and vaccination. Dr. Alap Gandhi, Country Medical Director of GSK Malaysia, highlighted Malaysia’s proactive initiatives in eliminating cervical cancer and GSK’s commitment to this cause since 2010. Professor Dr. Jamiyah Hassan emphasized the importance of HPV screening for early detection of precancerous disease, empowering women to take charge of their health.

HPV, a sexually transmitted infection, can lead to various health conditions, including cancer, if left untreated. Individuals at higher risk include those who become sexually active at a young age or have multiple partners. Regular screenings, such as Pap smears, are recommended for early detection, with follow-up tests for HPV-positive cases. Through awareness and proactive measures, GSK aims to contribute to achieving the World Health Organization’s targets for HPV vaccination and screening, bringing Malaysia one step closer to eliminating cervical cancer.
