GEORGE TOWN, March 29 – The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) is sounding the alarm on the detrimental effects of synthetic fertilizers on soil biodiversity. CAP urges farmers and consumers alike to steer clear of synthetic fertilizers, which can disrupt the delicate balance of microorganisms crucial for healthy soil ecosystems. While synthetic fertilizers may initially boost crop productivity, their overuse and misuse pose significant long-term risks to soil health. Synthetic fertilizers alter the pH of the soil, making it more acidic over time, which can adversely affect beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria essential for plant growth.
Moreover, excessive use of synthetic fertilizers can lead to nutrient imbalances and toxicity in the soil, harming not only nitrogen-fixing bacteria but also other soil organisms. This disruption in soil microbial communities can create a dependency cycle where plants rely less on naturally occurring nitrogen, further diminishing soil biodiversity. CAP advocates for sustainable agricultural practices that prioritize organic amendments and reduced fertilizer inputs to safeguard soil ecosystems and promote long-term agricultural sustainability.
