GEORGE TOWN, April 1 – In an effort to bolster safety measures within the George Town World Heritage Site, authorities have announced a reduction in speed limits on several roads, decreasing them from 50kph to 40kph. The affected areas encompass inner roads within prominent thoroughfares like Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, Gat Jalan Prangin, and Pesara King Edward, among others. While main roads within the heritage site will maintain a 50km per hour limit, this initiative aims to address safety concerns arising from narrow roads and high-speed motorcycle traffic, which pose risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and trishaw operators.

Penang Island City Council councillor Edward Tan emphasized the importance of this measure, citing studies that indicate a reduction in accidents in heritage sites with lower speed limits. Tan highlighted the broader benefits, including improved livability, reduced carbon emissions, and enhanced environmental sustainability, aligning with efforts to create vehicle-free and green zones. Additionally, the council has taken steps to deter haphazard parking, with the painting of curbs in red and white to alert drivers and mitigate traffic congestion, demonstrating a multifaceted approach to enhancing safety and quality of life in the iconic heritage area.
