GEORGE TOWN, April 2 – Penang’s ambitious plan for its first light rail transit (LRT) line is projected to surpass RM10.5 billion, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. This estimate encompasses the proposed rail network stretching from Komtar to Silicon Island and another line connecting Komtar to Butterworth, crossing the Penang Channel. Chow disclosed this figure to reporters at Komtar, emphasizing that the final cost hinges on the outcome of the request for proposal process and the subsequent finalization of agreements.
Despite concerns over potential traffic disruptions during construction, Chow stressed the necessity of the project for enhancing public transportation infrastructure. Acknowledging that the LRT system won’t single-handedly solve all traffic woes, Chow emphasized its role as a crucial starting point. He underscored the significant time and productivity losses incurred due to traffic congestion, urging the public to recognize the long-term benefits of improved public transport infrastructure.
Chow also addressed opposition from certain NGOs, urging them to consider the broader perspective. He cited overwhelming public support for the project, with over 90% of Penangites expressing approval in various engagement sessions. The Penang LRT Mutiara Line, spanning 29km with 20 stations, is expected to commence construction as early as September, with completion slated for 2030 under the management of SRS Consortium, a subsidiary of Gamuda Bhd.
