GEORGE TOWN, April 6 – Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) is urging the Penang State Government (PSG) to suspend approvals for major projects like the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the Penang Hill Cable Car until a comprehensive Local Plan for the island is established. While the Penang Island Structure Plan 2030 (SP) exists, it lacks detailed zoning information crucial for effective planning. Without a Local Plan, developments risk proceeding without proper oversight and accountability, potentially leading to adverse social and environmental impacts.
SAM emphasizes the importance of public participation in the planning process, as highlighted by the Federal Court. Transparency and democratic involvement are essential for ensuring that development aligns with community needs and concerns. Therefore, SAM urges the PSG to adhere to legal requirements and pause decision-making on mega projects until a thorough Local Plan is in place, ensuring responsible and transparent development practices on Penang Island.
