GEORGE TOWN, April 8 – The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) sounds the alarm on the perilous trend of overspending among Malaysian youth, urging a reality check amid global economic downturns and geopolitical uncertainties. Statistics reveal a staggering 73% of Malaysian youths are in debt, exacerbated by unsustainable spending habits fueled by a culture of instant gratification and the ease of credit card usage.

The allure of fads, amplified by psychological and social factors, further entangles young consumers, leading to distorted budgets and financial woes. CAP calls for greater financial literacy and prudent spending habits, emphasizing the importance of seeking assistance from resources like the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) to navigate the debt trap. Additionally, there’s a plea for the Education Ministry to integrate financial management courses into secondary school curricula to equip youths with essential skills for financial independence.
