GELUGOR, April 9 – The National Poison Centre (NPC) at Universiti Sains Malaysia plays a vital role in addressing poisoning incidents across the nation, closely monitoring emerging trends associated with new products or regulatory alterations. Over the span of 2015 to the present, the NPC has meticulously observed 111 cases linked to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and their accompanying liquids, with notable surges occurring during two distinct periods.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, incidents escalated significantly, predominantly impacting young children due to inadequate storage practices and the attractive packaging of e-cigarette liquids. Following the pandemic, a subsequent rise was observed in 2022 and 2023, with a concerning trend emerging among teenage users aged 15-19, emphasizing the critical need for stringent regulations outlined in the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2023 to mitigate e-cigarette-related harm and safeguard public well-being.
