GEOJE, SOUTH KOREA, April 12 – Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) has initiated the construction of its pioneering nearshore floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility, marking a significant milestone in Malaysia’s energy sector. At the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) Shipyard in Geoje Island, South Korea, a steel cutting ceremony was held to kickstart the construction phase of the nearshore FLNG facility. Once operational, this megaproject will stand as Malaysia’s inaugural nearshore FLNG facility, leveraging sustainability and innovation through the integration of energy-efficient power generation systems and aero-derivative gas turbines to curtail its carbon emissions.

Positioned at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP), the nearshore FLNG facility is poised to catalyze new investments in the region, underpinning PETRONAS’ commitment to advancing environmentally conscious energy solutions. Adnan Zainal Abidin, PETRONAS Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President & Chief Executive Officer of Gas Business, emphasized the transformative impact of the nearshore FLNG facility, stating, “Together with our partners in Sabah, we look forward to unlocking Sabah’s gas reserves in an optimised and environmentally sustainable manner, aligned with our efforts to provide energy security and position Malaysia as a key global hub for lower-carbon energy.”
