GEORGE TOWN, April 20 — The fate of Penang’s proposed undersea tunnel project remains uncertain as the state government has yet to reach a decision regarding its implementation, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. Chow stated that the state is awaiting recommendations from the steering committee on the project, which will scrutinize the recently approved 30-year Penang Port Commission (PPC) Development Master Plan.

This committee, led by state exco Zairil Khir Johari, will evaluate the master plan before making any decisions related to the undersea tunnel project. The proposed undersea tunnel, aimed at linking Gurney Drive on the island to Bagan Ajam in Seberang Perai, has been on hold pending the finalization of its feasibility study. Chow emphasized that the state will make a conclusive decision on the project after considering recommendations from the steering committee, especially concerning potential impacts from the PPC development master plan on the undersea tunnel’s proposed location.
