GEORGE TOWN, April 22 – Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reassured the public that Penang’s water supply remains secure, despite concerns over the dropping water level in Sungai Muda. Chow emphasized that the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) can still extract water from the river using pumps situated deep within its waters. Chow clarified that while a decrease in water levels may affect water extraction for neighboring regions like Sungai Petani and Pinang Tunggal, Penang’s extraction point at Sungai Dua operates independently.
He explained that the extraction points differ in depth, allowing Penang’s pumps to continue functioning effectively even during low water levels. Acknowledging the management of Sungai Muda’s water levels by Kedah’s dams, Chow expressed confidence that responsible authorities would ensure adequate water supply for agricultural and consumer needs. He also highlighted measures taken by Kedah’s water company, Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA), including releasing water from the Beris Dam to raise the river level.
Penang’s Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant plays a critical role in supplying 80% of the state’s water. Despite challenges posed by the dry spell and declining river levels, Chow’s reassurance underscores the commitment to maintain uninterrupted water supply for Penang’s residents and businesses.
