GEORGE TOWN, April 27 – The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) advocates for the repeal of 24-hour operating licenses granted to eateries, citing concerns over the detrimental health effects of late-night dining. While some establishments have voluntarily reduced their operating hours, CAP urges authorities to mandate early closures for all eateries to promote healthier lifestyles among Malaysians. CAP emphasizes the adverse impact of late-night meals, including weight gain, sleep disorders, and digestive issues, as supported by various studies.
With Malaysia facing alarming rates of obesity, ranking highest in South East Asia, the association underscores the urgent need for preventive measures to curb the obesity epidemic. Research indicates a direct correlation between late-night eating and obesity, with individuals exceeding their daily energy requirements by over 40%, significantly increasing the risk of weight-related health issues. Furthermore, CAP highlights the detrimental effects of prolonged access to unhealthy snacks and sugary beverages, contributing to oral health problems such as cavities and gum diseases.
The association calls on the government to take decisive action in promoting healthier eating habits and controlling the environment that fosters obesity. In parallel, Malaysians are urged to embrace healthier lifestyles and increase awareness to collectively build a healthier nation.
