KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 – With Malaysia’s population demographics shifting towards an ageing society, the spotlight on adult immunisation intensifies as a vital component of maintaining health and vitality in older adults. As the nation observes World Immunisation Week from 24th to 30th April, the focus extends to raising awareness about the importance of vaccinations for adults, particularly those aged 50 and above. The ageing trend in Malaysia, as projected by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, underscores the urgency of addressing adult immunisation.
With an estimated 2.5 million individuals aged 65 and above, and expectations of a significant increase in this demographic by 2040, it’s imperative to prioritize preventative healthcare measures. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), in conjunction with World Immunisation Week 2024, convened experts to discuss the evolving vaccine landscape and the socio-economic benefits of adult immunisation. Dr. Thanabalan Fonseka, Vaccines Medical Director of GSK Malaysia, emphasized the need for heightened awareness and accessibility to adult vaccinations, stressing the transition from reactive “sick care” to proactive preventative healthcare as paramount for a healthier ageing society.
