KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli has warned of higher gas imports if Malaysia fails to expedite its transition to sustainable energy, emphasizing the need to reduce dependency on traditional commodities. Rafizi highlighted that Malaysia imported approximately 25 per cent of its gas last year to fulfill electricity demands, a figure expected to rise to 30 per cent this year. He underscored the urgent need for action, citing declining crude oil production and the potential for complete dependence on imported gas energy by 2050, leading to escalated living costs.

The minister stressed the importance of restructuring the country’s economy, acknowledging the challenges in effecting such changes, including the need for mindset shifts and comprehensive policy design. He emphasized the necessity for coordinated efforts to ensure uniform progress across all sectors and levels, underscoring the importance of effective investment strategies for sustainable economic development.
