PUTRAJAYA, May 8 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has clarified that it currently has no plans to summon Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for questioning regarding his assets. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that investigations are still ongoing, indicating that there is no immediate intention to detain the former prime minister. In January, the MACC instructed Dr Mahathir’s sons, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir, to disclose their wealth amassed during their father’s tenure in office.
While the MACC has not yet pursued questioning of Dr Mahathir himself, the directive remains focused on investigating the wealth accumulated by his sons. Under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009, individuals with questionable wealth can be compelled to declare their assets within 30 days of receiving notice. Despite extensions granted to Mokhzani and Mirzan, they are still required to comply with the MACC’s directive. Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir has previously suggested political motives behind the investigations, hinting at retribution by the current government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
