KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 – The digital landscape, akin to a vast jungle, offers boundless opportunities for exploration and learning. Yet, amidst the wonders lie hidden dangers, especially for the young and impressionable. With Malaysian youth as young as 17 fully immersed in the online world, the need to safeguard children from deceptive practices and false advertising has never been more urgent. Consider a scenario where a child, engrossed in a mobile game, encounters a pop-up ad enticing them to make in-game purchases.
Such deceptive advertising tactics, prevalent in popular games, not only influence spending habits but also manipulate perceptions with exaggerated claims. Shockingly, studies reveal that the majority of free mobile apps targeted at young children contain commercial content, blurring the lines between entertainment and advertisement. Unchecked advertising can have far-reaching consequences, from promoting skewed body image ideals to glamorizing harmful behaviors like vaping and gambling. However, amidst these challenges, there is hope.
As guardians of the next generation, it is our collective responsibility to equip children with the tools needed to navigate the digital realm safely. Through parental guidance, educator support, and responsible content creation, we can empower children to discern fact from fiction and become savvy navigators of the online world. By prioritizing education and industry responsibility, we can create a safer online environment for our children’s future.
